Greensburg Writers Group
Guidelines (Revised Draft 7/29/08)

1. All pieces read should be works in progress, not published works. A piece is reviewed no more than twice by the group, but members are completely free to review each others work in depth and swap material at the meetings or through the mail.

Reviewing services are expected to be reciprocal. A writer who wants work reviewed must also review work presented by other writers.

Types of pieces:

Formal - Twelve copies should be supplied. These are normally pieces too long to read in their entirety at a meeting (longer than 5 pp. double-spaced pages,) but each submission should be no more than three chapters.. Formal pieces are passed out to members who review them and return comments in writing at the next meeting, at which the author reads a short excerpt. Each person at the table gives comments without interruption. The author then discusses the comments and general discussion can follow.

Informal - Twelve copies should be supplied. These are pieces that can be read in 5-7 minutes. Each person at the table gives comments without interruption. The author then discusses the comments and general discussion follows.

Extemporaneous - These are the pieces written in the last segment of the meeting. Each author reads a piece and informal praise and discussion follow briefly. These pieces may be revised and brought back as informals.

2. Meeting Format:

Reports and discussion of group GWG writing projects.

Review of formals.

Review of informals.

Extemporaneous writing from a prompt, picture, or writing exercise.

Reading and discussion of extemporaneous pieces.

3. Since the GWG is not a formal organization, it is not burdened with dues, accounting, officers or paperwork. Any funds made on writing projects are donated to worthy causes.

4. Meetings:

During Daylight Saving Time (Nov.-March.) meetings are the second and fourth Sundays of each month, from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm. During Standard time they are from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Meeting schedule and other events will be posted on the website: www.gbgw.net

Meetings are in our assigned room at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, 213 Smith Hall, unless the lounge behind the auditorium is free. There are no meetings in December but there is a holiday party at someone’s home. The group must have a faculty sponsor to get a room. Our current sponsor is Ms. Judy Vollmer.

5. Cancellations:

If the weather is bad, use your judgement about the safety of traveling to the college. Certainly staying safe is more important than attending a meeting. When in doubt play it safe.
